Group Urges Buhari To Tackle Virus That Kills Faster Than HIV And Ebola, Guess What?

For many years newspaper headlines have competed for stories on top government officials enmeshed in scams that involve millions and billions of naira. But despite a huge uproar, and campaigns by various organizations to shed a light on corruption, little has been done to curtail the spread of this ‘virus’. As a result of the spread of corruption, Nigeria has now become a shameful centre for different kinds of corrupt parasites. In this
vein, an Abuja-based non-governmental organization, Voice of the Voiceless, has proffered a possible way for the incoming government to expunge corruption, a major cause of poverty in Nigeria. The Voice of the Voiceless has admvocated that the incoming federal government should institute the death penalty for corruption in Nigeria, Leadership reports. The group revealed this while speaking to journalists during a march against corruption yesterday in Abuja. According to the group’s president, Comrade Oliver Ezeama, they were campaigning for the death penalty for corruption because it is fast destroying the nation. Comrade Ezeama said the group wants corruption to be killed from its root intead of just being managed. In his words,“Look at other African countries progressing; countries that Nigeria started with; they are far ahead of us and we are still behind. All these countries that are far ahead of us do not have oil or natural resources as much as we do but they are all progressing. “These countries were able to catch up and overtake Nigeria because they embraced transparency; integrity and dignity while we have remained underdeveloped by corruption, with citizens living in penury and from hand to mouth. It is high time we see corruption as a very serious issue in this country; the menace is more serious than Boko Haram.” “The nation has channelled a lot of energy into tackling or security challenge while corruption is killing the very essence of our nationhood. Boko Haram kills thousands while corruption kills millions every day. “Corruption is worse than HIV and even Ebola that is why we must develop anti-corruption policies as countries like China that stabilised their economy because of their strict action against corruption. That is why we are pushing for nothing less than death penalty because Nigerians are not scared of imprisonment, no matter the length of prison time meted out to them.” Corruption is commonly cited as the biggest among the many challenges in Nigeria. It is clear to every citizen of Nigeria that the level of corruption in the country is high, and corrupt practices are found in all sectors of the community.
