The Egyptian
government on Saturday (Sept 12)
submitted its resignation to President Abdel
Fattah al-Sisi, the presidency said, days
after the agriculture minister was arrested
over corruption.
“The prime minister (Ibrahim Mahlab)
handed the government’s resignation to the
president who accepted,” a statement said
without giving a reason for the resignation.
It said Mahlab was asked to stay on as caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed. There has been a lot of criticism of the government's performance recently, with the Egyptian agriculture minister having resigned last week amid corruption allegations. Sisi told the cabinet to remain in a caretaker role until a new cabinet was formed, the statement said.
