Ugandan police have released two top opposition leaders who say they will seek the seat of the president.
Ex-prime minister Amama Mbabazi and a leader of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party Kizza Besigye were arrested on Thursday.
Police say Mbabazi and Besigye were arrested for planning campaign rallies without permission. State-run New Vision newspaper quoted police spokesperson Fred Enanga as saying "the two politicians recorded statements and had since been released unconditionally". Police have made several warnings against holding public rallies without permission, with organisers required to submit details to the police at least three days before any meetings. Mbabazi who was fired by President Yoweri Museveni as prime minister last year wants to challenge for the ruling party's presidential ticket. But Museveni, who has led the east African nation since 1986, has been endorsed by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to represent it in next year's election. Museveni, in power since 1986, has been accused by the opposition and rights groups of using security agencies to intimidate and harass opponents.
