Islamic State's Egyptian affiliate says it carried out a bombing near Rafah which killed four soldiers on Thursday.
The Sinai Province, which says it represents IS in Egypt claimed the explosion at the town on the border with Gaza on its Twitter feed.
The group said in a statement that it had planted the bomb on the road between Rafah and the town of Sheikh Zuweid. The authenticity of the statement could not be verified. The Egyptian military had earlier said in a statement that an army officer and three soldiers were killed in the attack. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has said militancy poses an existential threat to Egypt, the most populous Arab country. The Sinai province has carried out a string of bomb and gun attacks this month including an assault on several military checkpoints in North Sinai. It was the fiercest fighting in the region in years.
