Al-Makura Assures Journalists Of Safety In Nasarawa

Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has given the assurance that practising journalists in the state would be given adequate security cover as they discharge their duties. Speaking through his special assistant on media and publicity, Alhaji Ahmed Tukur, Al-Makura reiterated that his administration had over the years enjoyed cordial relationship with the fourth estate in the overall interest and development of the state. He said as watchdog of the society, journalists have the onerous task of holding public office holders accountable to the people and cannot perform their duties in an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
The governor appealed to members of the public to decease from regarding journalists as enemies of state but as inalienable stakeholders in the common quest for national rebirth.
He, however, urged the press to practice their noble profession with the highest sense of responsibility devoid of sentiments and partisanship, adding that unquestionable credibility is the pillar upon which the profession thrives and once compromised it will not augur well both for journalism and the nation’s drive for development. It would be recalled that on 29th of May, while Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura was being inaugurated into office at the Lafia Square, some hoodlums manhandled the reporter of Daily Trust newspaper, Mr. Joseph Hir.
